Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips & Tricks

5 Tips for Whitetail Deer Hunting

Land of plenty.
Whitetail deer are common and plentiful in the province. They occupy the boreal forests and parklands of Manitoba. They can be found on farm lands and populated areas, preferring the fringes of settlement where man protects them from many of their foes.

Know your deer.
Whitetail deer can be hunted while Mule deer are protected. Whitetails are about 6 to 7 feet long with a large white 11- 12 inch tails. Their ears are about 9 inches long and deer will weigh between 200 to 300 pounds. Meanwhile, the mule deer is not as common and only found in southern Manitoba. They are smaller than the white tail and are about 5 ½ feet long. They have a shorter tail of about 7 inches with a black tip. They have large ears which are about 10 inches long. They also weigh between 200-300 pounds.

Scout it out.
Whitetails prefer people because they are safer with man, than living with wolves. They blend in very easily in populated areas and their range is small. They do not wander far and therefore can be scouted in advance. Whitetails will have a pattern to their feeding and bedding down areas. A few hundred acres will provide a year round home for a whole family of deer.

Push the bush.
Whitetails can be hunted from tree stands, stalking or pushing the bush. This “pushing the bush” method produces large numbers of deer but can be dangerous because of the „firing line”, whereby deer burst out of the woods at top speed and hunters are posted at the end of the wood lot. Tree stands are still the best method and selective hunting can be done waiting for that trophy buck to come out. It is also a wonderful opportunity to watch does and fawn frolic about while you wait for the trophy.

Buck snort.
When alarmed, a buck will send out a snort before dashing away; its white tail flashing like a beacon through the trees. Bucks can be called by using a grunt call or rattling antlers to simulate a fight for the favours of a doe in heat.
