6 Great Tips for Hunting Caribou
Be patient.
When bedded, the caribou will stay in the same spot for roughly an hour. Caribou can be unpredictable so watch them to predict their movements for at least an hour.
Get high.
The best vantage for scouting heard is up high in a stand and in an open area.
Wear layers of clothing.
Temperatures at our caribou camps average between 80F (27C) to 5F
(-15 C) with the possibility of clear sun shining day to wind and snow. With layers you can add or remove items of clothing as needed for the days hunt depending on the conditions of that day.
100% waterproof rain gear.
A light-weight water proof shell that can be put on and taken off and carried every day is a must, as weather can change quickly. You do not want to be caught without it.
Comfortable, waterproof footwear.
Our guides and many past clients use and swear by the knee high “Muck Boots”. There are many different brands of these styles of boots out there that are very good. These boots are a pull on rubber boot that is very comfortable and has very little to no break-in time needed. The terrain we hunt on is arctic tundra which is soft and moist. The frozen permafrost prevents the melt water and rain water to drain away so the ground is usually always wet. Knee high water proof boots are a must. Hip or chest waders are not necessary.
Rifle or bow? Shoot with confidence.
With respect to the calibre of firearm needed for caribou hunting, we suggest that you bring what you are comfortable and confident with. If you shoot a 270 confidently then that is what you should bring. Shots can vary from 20 yards to 400 yards so a gun you can shoot accurately at any distance is advised. If you are a bow hunter don‟t forget to bring it along as you will be hunting a herd of over half a million animals so it will be a target rich environment. Many past clients have had the great fortune to harvest one trophy bull with their rifle and then fill their second tag with their archery equipment.
